After having my third child and returning to work, my husband and I decided to hire a house cleaner. Between the both of us working full-time and three children to take care of, we simply did not have the time to clean our house. While I loved the idea of having a house cleaner, my mind quickly began racing with questions that I did not have the answers to. I wondered how much of my stuff should I put away before the house cleaner came, what all would the house cleaner clean, and if I should hide paperwork, such as bills. I did a lot of research to get the answers to my questions. Tips To Keep Your Storage Unit Tidy

If you have things that you are placing into a storage facility like Reliable Self Storage of Victorville, you will want to do a little advance planning in the set up of the interior of your storage unit to keep it organized. Keeping things tidy and in specific areas can really help a lot when it comes to searching for a needed item. Here are some tips that you can use to keep your storage unit neat and orderly.

Furniture Placement

When putting furniture in your storage unit, try to disassemble pieces of larger, bulkier items. Place the pieces together and use plastic wrapping material to keep them from being separated. If there are any hardware pieces, place them in a plastic sandwich bag, label it with the appropriate furniture name, and tape them to a piece of the furniture to keep them from getting lost.

Place furniture items along the sides of your storage unit so that they are kept out of the way of the area that will be utilized most. You can lean larger pieces, such as couches and mattresses, lengthwise against the side walls. This will allow you to have more space for your other items and it will help use space that is usually wasted in a storage unit.

Making Paths

You will want to leave the back wall of your storage unit free of any items. This will allow you to be able to navigate the entire storage unit quickly without having to climb over things that are in the way. Keep a path from the front of the unit to the back of the unit, as well.

Boxes And Bins

When placing smaller items in the unit, place the heaviest ones on the bottom of a stack so that they do not crush things with their weight. Use plastic storage bins instead of cardboard boxes, when able. Clear bins will allow you to see the contents inside while keeping the items safe from breakage. 

Label all your bins and boxes with large, black lettering on the sides so they can be identified from across the storage unit. Color-coding containers can also be of help. You can group items together by room by placing a colored index card on the corner of the container to represent which room it belongs.

Keeping Track

When organizing your storage unit, make a list of the things you are putting inside so that you can find them when needed. Draw a map of the interior of your storage unit, and place it by the front entrance so you can quickly locate things when needed.
